Dunkirk Council approves plans for August marathon

DUNKIRK – Plans for the annual Tri-Dunkirk Marathon on Aug. 24 were approved Tuesday by Dunkirk City Council members Tuesday with the understanding that the activities of the popular sporting event may be affected by construction in the city’s harbor area.

Council members reviewed the request from Richard Clark, race director for the marathon. It will be the fourth year that the event is held in the city. In the past, the event has drawn 400 participants. It includes swimming, a bike race and a running race.

Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano said he was confident that the group would work with city leaders if the route has to be changed because of construction. Replacement of the city’s seawall along Lake Front Boulevard is planned for this summer. There is also planned construction of a new playground and a promenade at the beach entrance.

In other business, the Council received notification from Mayor A.J. Dolce for the appointments of Robert Harris as city historian, Andy Bohn to the Planning Board and Kurt Warmbrodt and Eugene Pauszek to the Harbor Commission. The mayor said that there are some vacancies on other city committees. He urged anyone who is interested in volunteering on a committee to contact him.

Dunkirk City School Superintendent Gary Cerne’s request for police officers at the basketball game between Dunkirk and Fredonia on Jan. 31 was approved.

A resolution authorizing information and technology services from DFT of Fredonia at a cost of $950 each month for 16 hours of service was authorized.

The mayor said the agreement does not include replacement of computers but includes service of existing devices.

The mayor said he will announce his State of the City meeting and address in February.
