Warmer weather is on the way

Enjoy the sun while you can today.

The chilly but bright weather greeting shoppers and skiers alike today will give way this weekend to more seasonable temperatures – along with overcast skies that are likely to lead to rain – and then snow – in a couple of days.

Clouds are expected to roll in on Saturday, and by Sunday, there’s a 50 percent chance they will yield rain showers during the day.

By nightfall on Sunday, that rain will probably change to snow.

“There is that chance of rainfall mixing with snow, turning the snow we have on the ground into slush and freezing at night,” said Dan Kelly, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “So look out for slick spots Monday morning.”

The good news in that messy forecast, though, is that temperatures will gradually be climbing this weekend.

While the average high for today is 42 degrees, today’s high is expected to reach only into the high 20s, Kelly said, with the mercury reaching a few degrees higher downtown, closer to the lake. Tonight, the temperature is likely to dip down to 15 degrees, he said.

On Saturday, the high temperature is expected to be in the low 30s, with the overnight low on Saturday around 30 degrees, he said.

The temperature on Sunday will be close to the average for this time of year, in the upper 30s.
