Out to Eat: The Poppyseed’s large, hearty salads win rave reviews

When you ask a big guy where he likes to eat, and he starts talking about a place that has killer salads, you notice.

Several female diners had mentioned the Poppyseed (3670 McKinley Parkway, Blasdell), which offers hearty sandwiches, pasta dishes and more, besides salads. It’s been in the McKinley Plaza, across from the McKinley Mall, for more than 20 years, so it’s not a secret.

Part of the salads’ attractiveness is their size.

“Typically, it’s enough to feed two people,” said Chef Matt Powell.

The most popular one is definitely the Fall Harvest, he said. That’s dried cranberries, mandarin oranges, shredded asiago cheese, sliced New York State apples, walnuts and raisins, all on a big pile of spring greens ($11). Like all of the Poppyseed’s salads, it comes with toasted pita bread and choice of dressing.

Another popular hearty choice is the April Shower, built on fresh spinach, topped with goat cheese, candied pecans, grilled red onions, mandarin oranges, dried cranberries and grilled chicken.

Among the dressings, the standout is the house-made poppyseed dressing, a piquant blend of sweet and sour flavors. Powell said it contains Dijon mustard, honey, poppyseeds, house-made mayonnaise and red wine vinegar.

“If you’re gluten-free, just tell us. We know what products contain gluten, and we’ll make sure they leave them off the salad, or whatever you’re having here,” Powell said.

Every salad can be customized, since they’re all built to order, he said. “Nothing’s sitting around.”
