Drive by Truckers bring alt-country-rock extravaganza to Town Ballroom

Drive by Truckers, hot on the heels of the release of an expanded edition of the 2000 live album “Alabama Ass-Whuppin’,” arrive for a show at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Town Ballroom (681 Main St.). As if this legendary outfit wasn’t enough all on its own, the Old 97s will open the show, which makes Sunday’s gig an alt-country mini-festival.

Area fans of this band’s guitar-driven modern times update of classic ’70s Southern rock and No Depression-era alt-country are having a good year. Over the summer, former Trucker Jason Isbell played the Waiting Room on his solo tour, in a show many described as one of the summer’s finest. Now, the band’s current lineup – guitarist/vocalist Patterson Hood, guitarist/vocalist Mike Cooley, drummer Brad Morgan, keyboardist Jay Gonzalez and bassist Matt Patton – is convening after various solo endeavors, and we all know what that means. The Truckers will be fired up and ready to kick it hard Sunday.
