First a treat, then tricks, in Halloween weather forecast

Trick-or-treaters venturing outside for Halloween Thursday night may get a treat, in terms of weather, before things get tricky later on.

Temperatures on Thursday are expected to reach the mid to upper 60s. Though periods of rain are expected, a washout isn’t.

“We think there’s going to be a decent break,” said Jon Hitchcock of the National Weather Service in Buffalo, referring to the early evening hours when children will be making the rounds in their neighborhoods. But if any rain falls, it should be light, he added.

But then a strong cold front will move into the region late Thursday night, with winds of 30 to 40 mph gusting as high as 55 to 60 mph through Friday. A high wind watch already has been issued, effective from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

The strongest gusts will come with the front and behind it, Hitchcock said. And although temperatures will fall into the 40s on Friday, any precipitation that falls should be rain.
