Bills notebook: Spiller unlikely to play, so Wingo moves up

Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game in New Orleans, and Saints tight end Jimmy Graham is listed as questionable.

It would be a surprise if either one of them played.

Spiller was held out of Friday’s practice due to a sore ankle, and the Bills promoted running back Ronnie Wingo from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Wingo presumably will be ready to serve as No. 3 at running back behind Fred Jackson and Tashard Choice.

“We’re planning on taking it to game time. It may change before that,” Bills coach Doug Marrone said regarding Spiller.

The Bills also listed linebacker Manny Lawson as doubtful due to a sore hamstring that kept him out of practice.

Graham, the top weapon in the Saints’ offense, did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but was able to practice on a limited basis Friday, the Saints reported. He was not available to New Orleans reporters after practice.

The Saints have two other key players listed as questionable – defensive end Cameron Jordan (ankle) and right tackle Zach Strief (ankle). Backup running back Mark Ingram (toe) is questionable. Backup veteran safety Roman Harper (knee) is out.

The Bills released cornerback Brandon Burton to make room for Wingo.

Wingo, 6-foot-2 and 231 pounds, is a big, hybrid running back-fullback. He has been on the practice squad the first seven weeks of the season.

He was undrafted in April out of the University of Arkansas and was released by Atlanta in preseason. He saw action in 49 games in college. His best season was his junior year, when he shared the lead running back duties and rushed for 458 yards and three touchdowns. His senior year he got just 12 carries for 59 yards.

The Saints usually wear white jerseys and gold pants at home. On Sunday they’re wearing black jerseys and gold pants.
