Shutdown’s end means funding for research firm

WASHINGTON – CUBRC, a Buffalo-based research and development firm, got a big boost in the federal funding bill passed by Congress this week to end the government shutdown.

Language inserted in the bill by Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., restores funding for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, an agency whose funding had run dry.

CUBRC has a contract from the agency, worth up to $70 million over five years, to develop a new antibiotic to combat biothreats such as anthrax and plague, as well as pneumonia and other infections.
