All homeowners in New York who receive the Basic STAR property tax exemption must re-register with the state Tax Department in order to receive the STAR exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.
After this year, homeowners will not need to re-register every year. The re-registration is an effort to cut down on inappropriate or fraudulent exemptions for school taxes.
Letters have been mailed to property owners explaining the process, which can be completed on the Tax Department’s web site, www.tax.ny.gov.
Senior citizens who receive enhanced STAR do not have to re-register, but they must continue to apply annually or participate in the income verification program.
