Letter: Pope should accept what comes with job

Pope should accept what comes with job

People, especially the media, seem impressed that Pope Francis rented a room in a nearby hotel rather than moving into the papal quarters in the Vatican. Actually, he may be costing the faithful more money by bypassing rent-free rooms that the church already owns. Sometimes it’s best to humbly accept what comes with the job.

And carrying one’s own briefcase has precious little to do with the burden of the papacy, or even with humility. Rather, these seem more like acts of ostentatious singularity meant to impact our image-obsessed contemporary world of communications.

If he wants to go that route, Francis maybe could get himself photographed in jeans and suspenders playing a game of bocce with some elderly Italian gentlemen. Wow! Would that “go viral” fast.
