Letter: America must take a stand against chemical weapons

America must take a stand against chemical weapons

A recent letter writer said that the United States cannot and should not be the Supreme Court for the world and he went on to say he was against any military actions in Syria. I agree, but I think we should champion liberty and justice and show a willingness to defend the basic human rights of others in the face of tyranny and oppression. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor political, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.”

The use of chemical weapons is an atrocity against humanity and it is a crime against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations, which is set up to protect the inalienable rights for life, liberty and happiness of all members of the human family. Where is the outrage and conscience of all people of the world? Thou shalt not be a victim. Thou shalt not be a perpetrator. Above all, thou shalt not be a bystander. (Holocaust Museum, Washington, D.C.) May we never become bystanders to the atrocities of evil. If we do, we allow man’s inhumanity to man to prevail and we cease being Americans.
