ECC football loses on road to Nassau CC

UNIONDALE — The Erie Community College football team fell to 1-2 on the year after losing on Saturday to No. 8-ranked Nassau Community College, 23-6.

The Kats trailed, 10-6, in the third quarter when Nassau’s Travis Lock scored on a 17-yard run which capped a seven-play, 72-yard drive with 12:23 left in the quarter.

The Lions gave themselves some breathing room by scoring again early in the fourth on a 49-yard touchdown reception by Kason Campbell from quarterback Anthony Robbins.

Nassau, tied for third nationally in total defense, limited the Kats to a pair of field goals and 165 yards of offense.

ECC quarterback Connor Simmons completed just 10 of 23 passes for 77 yards and two interceptions. Tailback Tahj Dennis led the Kats with 48 yards rushing on 12 carries.

ECC’s Kyle Deween kicked field goals covering 45 and 52 yards. The Kats defense was led by Brandon Cannon, the team’s 29-year-old middle linebacker who had nine tackles, two tackles for a loss and a sack.

The Kats were held scoreless in last week’s 19-0 loss at Milford Academy after winning their season opener against Globe Tech, 17-6.

Robbins was 10 of 18 for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Lock rushed 20 times for 106 yards and a score.

Yahkee Johnson rushed for 71 yards on seven attempts for Nassau, who moved to 4-0 on the year.

The Kats play host to Hudson Valley next Saturday for homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
