Heavy rainfall sets daily record

We’ve set a new National Weather Service record for Sept. 21, though meteorologists concede it was a “fairly weak” record.

The weather service reported that 2.71 inches of rain had fallen at its Cheektowaga office by late Saturday afternoon, shattering the old daily record of 1.49 inches in 1992.

The record came on the final ay of summer.

“We’ll probably be just shy of 3 inches,” meteorologist Jon Hitchcock said.

The likelihood of showers was expected to linger into today, the first day of fall. The high is expected to reach only the upper 50s and the low, the lower 40s.
