The Buffalo Yacht Club hosted the prestigious Richardson Cup match on Lake Erie last weekend. The event was established in 1912 by Commodore S. O. Richardson Jr. of the Toledo Yacht Club. The sterling silver trophy, created by Tiffany & Co. and awarded to the champion, is the second oldest sailing trophy in U.S. history behind the America’s Cup.
The 74th running of the event featured teams from the Yacht Racing Union of the Great Lakes. Unlike fleet racing, match racing is unique in that short courses pit boats against each other in a one-on-one contest using identical equipment. The talent of the crew becomes the only differential and criteria for the winner.
James Barnash finished first, with Steve Lowery placing second and Will Holz finishing third.
The Lou Reuter Memorial Scholarship run will be raced over a new course when it takes place at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 20. The fourth annual mile run/walk and 5K will start at Ben Franklin Middle School and finish on the track within Adams Field, passing the Lou Reuter press box. Proceeds will go to the Lou Reuter scholarship fund.
Reuter was a dedicated teacher, coach and member of the Kenmore Town of Tonawanda Board of Education. The scholarship will be presented to a Kenmore East senior who demonstrates community service, school spirit and finishes in the top 40 percent of his or her class.
Entry fee for the race is $20 and the first 200 to register will receive a free T-shirt. You can register online with a credit card at www.signmeup.com. Call 983-5584.
