Squeaky Wheel moves popular Outdoor Animation Fest to Canalside

For a certain sort of Buffalo art lover, the highlight of the year is in late July, when dozens of people bring their blankets and picnic spreads to Days Park and settle in for Squeaky Wheel’s popular Outdoor Animation Festival. This year, the event was moved inside Squeaky’s Main Street headquarters because of rain, so the organizers decided to have another go. Its encore screening, which will feature more than a dozen short animated films from across the globe, starts at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Canalside.

Filmmakers included in the program employ a range of techniques, from old-fashioned stop-motion to digital animation. Among the films is a stop-motion feature by 12-year-old City Honors student Maria Ziaja, who created a playful animation of a flying bird being consumed by a shark called “Flying Bird” and another called “One Speck in the Universe” as part of Squeaky Wheel’s Tech Arts for Girls program.

The screening is free. Call 884-7172 or visit for more information.
