Where We Live: Hamburg

Hamburg School Board members plan to talk more at their next meeting about a search for a new superintendent, and some of them are feeling pressure about the search.

“It’s no secret we’re in a horse race with Frontier,” Board Member Thomas F. Flynn III said at last Tuesday’s School Board meeting.

Hamburg Superintendent Steven Achramovitch’s retirement is effective Saturday. Frontier Superintendent James C. Bodziak announced July 9 that he will step down Sept. 9.

“I don’t think we’re in a race with Frontier,” Board President David Yoviene said, adding the board should not be in a hurry to find the right person.

The board has asked Erie 1 BOCES Superintendent Donald Ogilvie to discuss the search process at its Aug. 13 meeting, and it has asked its business administrator to issue a request for proposals for search firms.

Meanwhile, the Frontier School Board is expected to hire a search consultant during its meeting Tuesday to help lead the district in its search for a new superintendent. The board meets in an executive session at 6 p.m., followed by a business meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the Frontier Educational Center, 5120 Orchard Ave.
