Houston Person headlines Pine Grill Reunion on Sunday

The great saxophonist Houston Person is coming to town Sunday to headline the Pine Grill Reunion, Buffalo’s annual free tribute to gutbucket jazz. A legend in jazz, Person is the real deal, with not only tremendous musicianship but tremendous spirit. Last time he was here, two years ago, he soldiered on with his beat-up sax in spite of intermittent showers, and the audience loved him. It is poignant to recall when he played the party in 2001, he was accompanied by his wife, Etta Jones, who has since passed on.

Also on the bill Sunday are Chicago-based songstress Kenya, who performed this past June at the Tralf; vocalist Vinnie Knight; and blues guitarist and singer Ray Schinnery – who, it is whispered, sounds like B.B. King.

Pack up your blankets, lawn chairs and treats. The concert, which is really more like an old-fashioned picnic, begins at 4 p.m. in Martin Luther King Park.

It will be followed at 4 p.m. Aug. 12 by a second concert spotlighting local players, including Shorty Long and the Resurrection Band, the Unity Band and the Jazz Example Legacy featuring Flick Williams.
