Locally owned pharmacy falls victim to competition

CORFU – Burling Drug Co., the village’s only pharmacy, has closed its doors because of competition from big-box chain stores and other factors.

Daniel J. Burling, who opened the business 21 years ago, said declining reimbursements, mail order prescriptions and large chain stores with pharmacies prompted the closing.

Burling is a former assemblyman who represented Wyoming County and parts of Genesee and Erie counties for several terms. Batavia, a 15-minute drive away from Corfu, has six stores filling prescriptions. Only one of them is locally owned.
