Bills training camp capsule: Defense has early edge in first practice

Sunday: Day 1 of 18.

Highlight: The Bills practiced without pads for 2½ hours in St. John Fisher’s Growney Stadium. Overall, the defense looked better than the offense.

QB watch: Veteran Kevin Kolb got most of the first-team work and took 36 snaps to 28 for rookie EJ Manuel during 11-on-11 work.

Roster update: The Bills bolstered their depth on the offensive line by signing two players – guard Antoine Caldwell and tackle Tony Hills. … Justin Rogers started at cornerback ahead of Leodis McKelvin.

Injury notes: Defensive end Mario Williams was in uniform but sat out with a sore foot. Defensive tackle Kyle Williams did individual drills but not full-team sessions.

Schedule: 2 to 5:10 p.m. Monday, 8 to 11:10 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
