Jay Skurski recaps the third round of the Porter Cup

On top: Taylor Pendrith, a 22-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., shot a 7-under 63, tied for the low round of the tournament, to open a one-shot lead. Pendrith is playing in his first Porter Cup.

In the hunt: First-round leader Justin Shin is just one shot back, at 12-under 198. Shin has played the back nine in 13-under-par through three rounds. Second-round leader Tyler Dunlap shot an even-par 70 and at 10-under is three shots back.

Locals report: The best round of the day among the eight Western New Yorkers in the field was turned in by Michael Boss, the Niagara Falls Country Club club champion. He shot even-par 70 and is tied with Buffalo’s Michael Carrig for the low score among area players at 7-over 217, tied for 57th overall.

Schedule change: Tee times for the final round have been moved up a half hour, with the first group off at 7:30 a.m. and the leaders at noon, in an effort to get the round in before expected afternoon rain.

By the numbers: The scoring average improved for the second straight day, down ever so slightly to 70.71 in the third round from 70.76 in the second. The most difficult hole Friday was the par-4 17th, at an average of 4.43 strokes, while the easiest was the par-5 11th for a second straight round, at 4.58.
