John J. Stone, who was ordained a deacon in the first class to be named to the Diocese of Buffalo Diaconate in 1980, died Thursday after a lengthy illness. He was 88.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a graduate of Canisius College and worked as an administrator for Doehler-Jarvis, a Batavia die-casting company, for 26 years.
He served as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph’s Sodality and the Manor House, where he lived.
He was one of the oldest surviving member of Botts-Fiorito Post, American Legion, in his hometown of Le Roy. He was a professional musician, playing bass for local bands.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Manhan; a son, Douglas; and a brother, Donald.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today in Resurrection Catholic Church, 303 E. Main St., Batavia.
