Blue Jays rehab tour continues in Buffalo as Cabrera, Santos join Herd tonight

By Mike Harrington

Josh Johnson, Jose Reyes, Brett Lawrie have already been here. Now it's time for the Bisons to host Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera and reliever Sergio Santos.

Cabrera and Santos were assigned to Buffalo on injury rehab today and are scheduled to play in tonight's series opener against Toledo at 7 p.m. in Coca-Cola Field.

Cabrera has been on the Blue Jays' disabled list since June 27 with left knee tendinitis. He is  3 for 13 in four rehab games with Class A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire.  Cabrera hit .278 with 13 doubles, three home runs and 29 RBI in 78 games with the Blue Jays before the injury, and his status remains in limbo as his name has been linked to pending suspensions in baseball's Biogenesis scandal.

Cabrera was signed by the Blue Jays during the off season after hitting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in 113 games with the San Francisco Giants. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 MLB All-Star Game with a two-run home run in Kansas City but didn't finish the season after earning a 50-game suspenion for use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Santos has been on the DL since April with a right triceps strain. He pitched five games in Toronto before the injury with a 2.08 ERA. He has pitched six rehab games this month in Class A after undergoing shoulder surgery last July. Santos has yet to find the form that allowed him to post 30 saves for the White Sox in 2011.
