Suggestions aired for keeping seniors cool during heat wave

With high temperatures expected to remain at or close to 90 degrees in the Buffalo area through Wednesday, local senior-care experts are advising families to take extra precautions to protect senior citizens, who are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of heat.

Some of the tips are obvious, like remaining well-hydrated, avoiding strenuous exercise and staying out of the sun during the hottest times of the day.

Others may be a bit more subtle, including keeping a glass of water in every room, removing heavy clothing from a senior citizen’s closet, saving household chores for the early morning or evening and even encouraging vulnerable seniors to take a nap between 3 and 5 p.m., according to Home Instead Senior Care.
