Elderly woman dies in Lewiston house fire

A fast-moving fire in a house on Saunders Settlement Road in Lewiston claimed the life of an elderly woman, according to state police.

After the fire was extinguished, the body of Florance Placek was located in the doorway of the master bedroom on the second floor.

Troopers responded to the residence at about 5:30 a.m. and found smoke coming from an air conditioner located on the second floor, but could not gain entrance because of fire and smoke.

Firefighters from Lewiston 2, Niagara Active, Sanborn and Upper Mountain responded to knock down the fire.

Niagara County fire investigators determined the cause of the fire, which started in the master bedroom, to be electrical.

The fire appears to be accidental, and no foul play is suspected, state police said.

The fire was reported at about 5:15 a.m. The house is located on Saunders Settlement near the intersection with Hewitt Drive east of Military Road.
