Letter: Women’s Bar promotes equal justice for everyone

Women’s Bar promotes equal justice for everyone

The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York’s Western New York Chapter (WBASNY WNY) is pleased to explain the process by which it participates in promoting the fair and equal administration of justice by rating judicial candidates running for local judgeships. Each election cycle, WBASNY WNY is approached by both male and female judicial candidates seeking to be rated by our organization.

WBASNY WNY uses a four-level rating system of Outstanding, Highly Qualified, Qualified and Not Recommended. Ratings are based upon personal interviews with candidates, evaluation of writing samples and questionnaires submitted by candidates and a survey of our membership as to members’ professional experience with candidates. As part of the overall rating, judicial candidates are rated Excellent, Very Good, Good and Poor in the areas of judicial temperament, reasoning ability and communication skills, legal experience and background for the position sought and sensitivity to women’s and community issues.

It is a privilege to provide this service. WBASNY WNY’s membership includes more than 300 local attorneys, male and female, committed to the mission of promoting the advancement of the status of women, promoting the fair and equal administration of justice and acting as a unified voice with respect to issues of statewide, national and international significance to women generally and to women attorneys in particular.

WBASNY WNY has been lauded for the perspective it brings to the process and for its comprehensive, measured approach to ratings. Our Judiciary Committee is comprised of respected members of the local bar, male and female. We look forward to continuing to provide this valuable service to our members and to the community at large for years to come.
