Poem of the Week by Joyce Kessel

A Year at the Corner

By Joyce Kessel

for Linda

There are many who come

to this shoreline –

the hardiest souls in winter –

but it is just the artist who is drawn

by the confluence of river and canal

to mark its fiercest moods and calmest nights,

studying day after day

without fail

the fauna, the flora,

its other visitors,

the shifts of light –

especially the shifts of light –

a year-long panorama

of landscape and reflection

caught by her brush and knife

in every color of discipline’s soul.

JOYCE KESSEL will join poets Ruth Thompson and Marjorie Norris in this month’s Fourth Friday Poetry Series reading at 7 p.m. this Friday at Dog Ears Books, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo. She is an associate professor and chair of the liberal arts program at Villa Maria College and a co-editor of Earth’s Daughters magazine. Her first collection of poems is titled “Secret Lives.”
