The Road 2 Recovery 5K Mental Health Run and Wellness Walk – A Superhero Run! starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. George Catholic Church and Delaware Park.
The only race/walk in Western New York dedicated to mental health awareness will be hosted by Compeer of Greater Buffalo and the Mental Health Association of Erie County. The organizations, along with the mental health association’s Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program, came up with the “Superhero Race” theme. Organizers encourage all participants to dress up in their favorite superhero costumes to help raise awareness for the program, which helps abused children have their voice in court and in the community.
The theme calls attention to the idea that while every child needs a hero, abused children need superheroes.
Road 2 Recovery is a collaborative effort of providers, consumers, families, friends and caring community members dedicated to promoting awareness, reducing stigma and raising funds to help people striving for good mental health. Proceeds from this event are awarded, in part, to local mental health consumers and providers to help with mental health research, rehabilitation and recovery in the region.
North Buffalo residents Rosemary and Bill McGrath are co-chairs of the event, which is a USA Track & Field-sanctioned 5K race and walk, as well as a 1.8-mile wellness walk. All community members are invited to attend the event, which features a family-friendly after-party. Registration fees are $25 for walkers and $30 for runners.
