James E. Bodkin, retired Buffalo firefighter

Oct. 14, 1946 – Jan. 2, 2013

A funeral for James E. Bodkin, a retired Buffalo firefighter who died in Florida after a long illness, will be held Monday in South Buffalo.

Mr. Bodkin died in January at his home in Lakeland, Fla., after a long illness. He was 66.

Mr. Bodkin was born in Buffalo’s Old First Ward and graduated from Bishop Timon High School in South Buffalo.

Shortly after high school he was drafted into the Army and served in the Vietnam War, including one year in Vietnam.

After returning from the war he joined the Buffalo Fire Department and worked his way up to lieutenant. He received many commendations in that post, his family said, and later became an instructor at the department’s fire training tower.

Mr. Bodkin retired in 2000 with his wife, Maureen, to Lakeland, Fla. He was an avid golfer in Florida, playing five days each week.

Besides his wife of 46 years, survivors include a daughter, Denise Reynolds; two sons, Steven and Gregory; a sister, Mary Greber; and two brothers, Jack and Tom.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 450 Abbott Road.
