Locals lose pro debuts at Miller tournament

Khristina Blajkevitch of Victoria, B.C. provided the day’s biggest upset Sunday in the $10,000 Sargent & Collins, LLP Women’s Tennis Championships at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.

Blajkevich defeated Ashley Murdock of Memphis, Tenn., 6-1, 6-0, and will face American Beatrice Capra today in the second round of qualifier matches.

Two local players lost in their professional debuts. Fourteen-year-old Brianna Gibbs of Williamsville lost to Sonya Latycheva of Toronto, 6-3, 6-0 while Nasha Ghajar of Lebanon, who now lives in Orchard Park, lost to Jacqueline Crawford of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., 6-0, 6-0.

All tournament matches are free to the public and are held at 5959 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville.
