Falls company says cloud of steam was not hazardous

NIAGARA FALLS – Tier NY reported Thursday that no hazardous materials were in a steam cloud released during cleaning on Tuesday.

City police and fire responded to a reported chemical leak Tuesday morning at the plant on 33 S. Hyde Park Blvd.

Tier NY reported Thursday that the routine cleaning released a cloud of water vapor/steam and was improperly identified by a neighboring business as hazardous.

The company said the Niagara Falls Fire Department found no evidence of hazardous waste or harmful discharge and no injuries were reported. It also noted that the cleaning of the vessel was done within procedures that are compliant with federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements.

“At no time was the safety of the community, or our industrial neighbors, or our employees put at risk,” said Richard Borrello, the company’s general manager.
