Letter: Republicans should get themselves suited up for war

Republicans should get themselves suited up for war

The war drums are being banged again by the Republican Party. In a recent interview Condoleezza Rice claimed that we cannot sit idly by in the Syrian conflict. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., met with Syrian rebels and called for their support by the United States. There had been tough talk not too long ago about North Korean missile movements. It seems as though the party of the 10-year wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wants the United States in a perpetual state of war.

A key question is who will fight and pay for these wars? We know enormous profits are made from a constant war footing. The fighting is done by the sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of the poor and middle class. Not the kids of those in the House of Representatives or on easy street. Mitt Romney’s taxes won’t pay for the next war but your taxes will.

It would be refreshing for some of the gung ho Republicans to volunteer for military service and give money for the cause. Some groups come to mind: the extreme NRA members who already are armed and ready to go; extreme senators like Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky seem healthy and fit for combat, and the Koch brothers have plenty of profits to pay for another endless war.

Then, after 10 years of fighting in Syria, we can ask them if it was worth it.
