Business people: Hires, promotions and honors

The University at Buffalo appointed Dr. Peter L. Elkin professor and founding chair of the new Department of Biomedical Informatics. Elkin was vice president and professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and director of its Center for Biomedical Informatics. He earned his undergraduate degree from Union College and his medical degree at New York Medical College. He trained in internal medicine at the Lahey Clinic and was a clinical fellow in medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Rich Products Corp. promoted Mike Rudney to director, procurement optimization. He earned an MBA from the University at Buffalo. The company also promoted Rob Clark to procurement manager. Clark most recently served as senior project leader within the company’s In-Store Bakery Division. He also earned an MBA from UB.

UB|MD Internal Medicine promoted Chara Chen to director of business operations. Chen previously served as associate manager for three years. She received her MBA from the University of Central Florida. UB|MD Internal Medicine is one of 19 practice plans operating under the UB|MD Physicians’ Group umbrella.

First Niagara Financial Group named Deb Burgess senior vice president and director of treasury management. Burgess was a senior vice president at Santander’s/Sovereign Bank in Boston. She is a graduate of Assumption College.

Wendel appointed Michael W. Wymer senior environmental engineer. Wymer, with more than 25 years of national and international experience in water treatment processes, has been village engineer in Blasdell for 16 years. He is a graduate of the University at Buffalo.

The Martin Group, a Buffalo advertising agency, promoted Julie Molenda to senior brand manager. Molenda joined the agency as a brand manager in 2010. She graduated from Genesee Community College and SUNY Buffalo State. Also, the agency promoted Brittany Klotzbach to traffic manager. Klotzbach, a University at Buffalo graduate, joined the agency in 2010 and most recently served as traffic coordinator.

NetPlus Alliance, a buying group for industrial and contractor supplies distributors, named Zachary Brado marketing coordinator. Brado has an MBA from the University at Buffalo School of Management, He started at the company as an intern through UB’s internship program.

MidCity Office Furniture has named Sara Gleason lead designer. A native of West Seneca, Gleason is a graduate of Villa Maria College.

Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York elected Louis Atti and Mark Garvelli as regional directors of the association. Atti is vice president of The Evans Agency in Angola. Garvelli is vice president of personal lines for Walsh Duffield Companies in Buffalo.

Marsha Brauer, manager/CEO of Clarence Community & Schools FCU in Buffalo, received the 2013 Outstanding Professional Award by the Credit Union Association of New York in the less than $50 million category and Donald Bruning, board president of Great Erie FCU in Buffalo, was honored with the award in the $50-250 million category.
