High bacteria closes Krull Park Beach

OLCOTT – Krull Park Beach on Lake Ontario is closed until further notice because of high bacteria levels in the water, the Niagara County Health Department announced today.

This is the first closure of the season at the Olcott beach, which has been plagued by frequent shutdowns because of e. coli bacteria.

Investigations so far have failed to pinpoint the source of the bacteria at the beach, a short distance east of the mouth of Eighteen Mile Creek, a waterway whose corridor from Olcott to Lockport is due for a remedial plan as a federal Superfund site.

The Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on its plans at 7 p.m. today at the Niagara County Fairgrounds, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport.
