Tax credit legislation will help all students
A recent letter questions our organization’s commitment to public school children in the City of Buffalo because of our support for the Education Investment Tax Credit. The writer could not be more off the mark.
We support this legislation because it will help all students, both public and private. Here are the facts: The bill will help public schools by creating a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for donations to public school districts and individual schools, which can use the funds to pay for enrichment, sports or other worthy programs that increasingly are difficult to fund through state aid or local tax dollars.
The legislation helps teachers by giving them, for the first time, a dollar-for-dollar credit on their state taxes when they spend their own money on classroom supplies, which we all know they do much too often.
And it helps families, who want the choice to attend a Catholic or private school, by incentivizing donations to private scholarship funds like the BISON Fund.
This legislation is entirely in line with our organization’s mission of “empowering the community to put the needs of students first.” It creates more opportunities for students and more choice for families.
Buffalo ReformED is incredibly proud to join a remarkably bipartisan and diverse group of Buffalo’s elected officials in supporting this bill, including Assembly Members Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Robin Schimminger and Jane Corwin, as well as area State Sens. George Maziarz, Timothy Kennedy and Mark Grisanti.
Let the 10,000 students, parents, teachers and leaders who rallied at First Niagara Center on April 10 serve as a testament to the overwhelming local support for this important legislation. We welcome others to join this broad coalition to help all Buffalo children.
