Five-car accident on Grand Island Bridge sends two to hospital

Two people were taken to area hospitals following a five-vehicle chain-reaction accident in the southbound lane of the North Grand Island Bridge before rush hour Tuesday morning, Grand Island fire officials reported.

The crash, which occurred at about 6:30 a.m., apparently was caused by motorists attempting to avoid a vehicle breakdown in one lane of traffic, the Grand Island Fire Co. stated.

Pamela Vesci, 46, of Niagara Falls, had to be extricated from her heavily damaged vehicle and was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center as a precaution, Fire Chief Kevin Koch reported.

Emergency personnel also took 47-year-old Cindy Maurer, of Niagara Falls, to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Four other people were evaluated at the scene but claimed no injuries, fire officials stated. Normal traffic was restored shortly before 7:30 a.m.
