Depew’s Reinstein Center gets the ‘green’ light

During a celebration of the 43rd Annual Earth Day at Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center in Depew on Monday, DEC Region 9 Director Abby Snyder presented a plaque that certified the center as a “green” facility. Reinstein Woods has environmentally sound facilities deserving of certification as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design site.

Wood used in the Environmental Center is from trees harvested locally. The center has radiant floor heating, tankless water heaters and energy-efficient windows throughout its 4,900-square-foot interior spaces.

After the plaque presentation, visitors enjoyed a brief tour of the education center grounds and viewed the preserve’s abundant native landscape that serves as habitat for wildlife species typically seen in the Western New York area.

Snyder also announced the release of the “New York Wildlife Viewing Guide,” a 248-page source for locating great places to find flora and fauna across the state.

This guide could help Reinstein visitors and all interested in New York State’s wildlife to locate and enjoy all that is outdoors.

The guide is available on sale for $10.95 at the Web site Or one can receive a free copy of the guide with a one-year subscription ($15) to Conservationist Magazine at
