Motor festival back in high gear

After months of uncertainty, a new one-day motor festival is on track for presentation July 27 in Marilla.

The sponsoring committee includes a newcomer to Marilla, Carl Drechser, as chairman. He contacted the Marilla Town Board in January to see what the town required in its new permit process.

He said then that he and others were disappointed that the original car show was moving to another town.

Many residents and car lovers are happy a car show will go on again for the 10th year in a row even though it will be a shorter event, with a different name, and a different charity, “Wings Flights of Hope,” which provides air transport for children who need medical attention from out-of-town facilities. The new show will replace the former Marilla Car Show, which has moved to Alden this year.

Show cars will be lined up as usual along Two Rod and Bullis roads, but this year the first 150 to register online, said Drechser, will have their fees waived and receive premier spots in the heart of town.

Drechser said the committee expects to file for a town permit with proof of insurance shortly. The town now requires this 90 days before the event, which has drawn upward of 20,000 people to the small town over two days.

The new permit process also will require a list of vendors and contact numbers for those running the event, among other details.

Drechser said: “While the show is largely about the cars, we are doing more focus on music and the food. There will be 12 bands playing throughout the event, with two stages, one at each end of the main thoroughfare.”

There will be a “Taste of Marilla” with a sampling of signature food items from various restaurants, and there will be food trucks available.

The usual car show awards will be supplemented with games of chance.

The Marilla Motor Festival does not plan to sponsor a beer tent, but Drescher said one will be available, sponsored by others.
