Freda Vance, switchboard operator at Goodwill

May 28, 1925 – April 21, 2013

Freda Vance, of Cheektowaga, a switchboard operator for Goodwill Industries in Buffalo, died Sunday in Newfane Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after a short illness. She was 87.

Born in Buffalo, Miss Vance attended city schools.

Hindered from consider- ation for many jobs because she stood less than 4 feet tall, she joined Goodwill in 1953, working in the clothing department, and soon was promoted to the switchboard.

“She commuted to her job by bus from Cheektowaga,” said her niece, Kathleen Padin. “She was one of those people who never missed a day of work.”

Miss Vance also led tours of Goodwill operations, and she mentored and gave encouragement to new employees.

She was honored for her inspirational role when she retired in 1986.

She enjoyed playing bingo.

Survivors include a sister, Wendy Shiebert.

Services will be private.
