A memorial service for Robert North Jr. of Buffalo, a retired Buffalo & Erie County Public Library employee, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in St. John’s-Grace Episcopal Church, 51 Colonial Circle.
Mr. North died Nov. 15 in Buffalo General Medical Center. He was 102.
Born in East Aurora, he was a 1929 graduate of the Nichols School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1933. He earned his library science certificate from the University of Buffalo in 1935.
During World War II, Mr. North served 2½ years in Cairo while enlisted in the Army.
After the war, he became head of the reference library for Emory University in Atlanta. Following his term as director of the Kanawha County Public Library in Charleston, W.Va., from 1949 to 1952, Mr. North returned to Buffalo, where he was appointed second deputy director of the Erie County Public Library. In 1954, he was appointed assistant deputy director of the newly formed Buffalo & Erie County Public Library.
He retired in 1973 and some years later donated to the library a collection of posters from the Irish Classical Theatre Company that were created by illustrator and designer Michael Gelen. After his retirement, he helped create the library of the School of Architecture and Environmental Design at UB, for which he received the Dean’s Community Service Award in 1984.
