A walk may be better for you

Walking vs. running

Keep moving, slow movers, and don’t worry about those who might flash by you with that supposedly all-knowing grin. It turns out walking may be healthier for you than running, according to a study of more than 30,000 runners and 15,000 walkers released this month by the American Heart Association:

• Running reduced the risk for first-time hypertension 4.2 percent, while walking reduced risk 7.2 percent.

• Running reduced first-time high cholesterol 4.3 percent; walking 7 percent.

• Running reduced first-time diabetes 12.1 percent, compared with 12.3 percent for walking.

• Running reduced coronary heart disease 4.5 percent compared with 9.3 percent for walking.

Study participants were 18 to 80 years old, clustered in their 40s and 50s. Men represented 21 percent of the walkers and 51.4 percent of the runners.

Healthy Walking Challenge

BlueCross BlueShield of WNY has picked 10 walking events this year designed to promote fitness while supporting important community efforts. “The whole idea of the challenge was built around small steps to healthy,” said Moira Giammaresi, a corporate relations specialist.
