Survivors of fatal van crash remain hospitalized

The seven survivors involved in Thursday’s Thruway crash remain in the hospital, their conditions ranging from stable to critical.

Jessica Gonzalez, 24, was in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Erie County Medical Center on Friday, a hospital spokesman said.

One of the more painful moments came when family broke the news to Gonzalez that three of her loved ones perished in the crash: her boyfriend, Luis A. Arroyo, 27; her sister, Christieann Gonzalez, 29; and her 1-month-old baby boy, Luis Arroyo Jr.

“She’s heavily sedated and thinks it’s a dream,” Casimiro D. Rodriguez Sr., a relative of the Gonzalez family, said Friday. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

Jessica Gonzalez’s other two boys Jaicob, 2, and Jaiden, 4, are still in stable condition at Women and Children’s Hospital, as is their cousin, Alexis Rodriguez Jr., 10, who is one of Christieann’s children.

Chistieann’s other two children, Yamaris, 8, and Alexandra, 13, as well as Arroyo’s 6-year-old daughter, Adrianna, were the most severely injured and remain in critical condition at Women & Children’s, an official said.

The 10 were traveling back home to Buffalo from Florida early Thursday morning, when their minivan drifted off the eastbound Thruway near Silver Creek and crashed into a dump truck parked in the median.

Arroyo and his infant son were pronounced dead at the scene. Christieann was taken to Lake Shore Hospital, where she later died.

Family members have been coming in from out of town the past couple of days, but funeral arrangements were still incomplete on Friday.
