Dunkirk Housing Authority members to again get stipends

DUNKIRK – A motion to resume paying a stipend to members of the Dunkirk Housing Authority was approved Tuesday by a 3-2 vote among members of the City Council.

The motion to pay $30 to members for each meeting was supported by three of the five Council members. The stipends could total $2,750 per year. The amount was removed from the 2013 budget last year. The motion to reinstate the payments was presented by Councilman William Rivera and supported by Councilmen Andy Rivera and Michael Michalski.

Councilwomen Stacey Szukala and Stephanie Kiyak voted against the measure. Szukala said she thought that the funds were removed for good reason and that other boards are served by volunteers who are unpaid. She said members of the Harbor Commission and Development Board are not paid.

In other business, Mayor A.J. Dolce said that work on the city’s bike path will resume today. He said that other projects also will start soon and that residents can expect construction around the city.
