Letter: Let’s work together to end child abuse

Let’s work together to end child abuse

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and we have seen several heinous child fatalities and child-battering cases in our community over the last few months. In the most recent example, a 4-year-old girl was nearly beaten to death for allegedly crying too much. As reported in The News, the rapid and professional response by Erie County Child Protective Services workers saved the life of this innocent child. The excellent work by Buffalo Police Department veteran detectives from the SOS Unit led to the quick arrest of the alleged perpetrator, who reportedly has a history of assaulting children. Kudos to these hardworking, committed first responders who protect our community’s precious children. Too often child protection is blamed for bad results; it’s crucial to acknowledge the tireless work that goes on day in and day out that saves the lives of children.

Nationwide, pinwheels symbolize child abuse prevention. Every child deserves a happy, carefree and safe childhood that the pinwheel represents. Please join me and others at 11:15 a.m. on April 22 at Lafayette Square while we march to Niagara Square and rally at noon at City Hall. Together we will continue to fight the scourge of child abuse, which claims the life and physical and mental health of far too many of our community’s children. Bring your pinwheels.
