Niagara University offers Guatemala trip

LEWISTON – An information session on a backpacking trip to Guatemala next January is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday on the fourth floor of St. Vincent’s Hall on the Niagara University campus.

The “Great Guatemalan Challenge,” an eight-day journey, includes hiking an active volcano, exploring Spanish and Mayan villages, sleeping in hostels and mountain lodges, and meetings with community leaders devoted to alleviating poverty in some of Guatemala’s poorest communities.

The trip will be led by Joseph Little, associate professor of English at Niagara, and Sam Lightowler, a training superintendent at the Toronto Transit Commission. Participants must be 21 or older and possess an ability to work well in a team atmosphere.

The cost of the program is $2,450, which includes everything except food. Niagara alumni receive a $300 discount. Reservations for the information meeting can be made by calling 286-8181.
