Batavia residents to vote on library funding

BATAVIA – Voters in the city school district will be asked to approve a $25,000 increase in funds for the Richmond Memorial Library. It would boost the district’s annual appropriation to $1.2 million.

The vote on May 7 at the Ross Street site will include the election of a board of trustees member for a five-year term. Jennifer Reardon, a Cornell Cooperative Extension nutrition program coordinator, is the sole candidate. She will succeed Tracy Stokes, who is stepping down after one term.

The historic library, named for its Dean Richmond family benefactor, also is seeking voter approval at the district election May 21 of $1.6 million in building improvements. Funds for the project, which includes replacing an historic slate roof, will come from capital reserves.

The budget, in which salaries and benefits account for 75 percent of the total, will be explained along with the library’s long-range plan at an information meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Gallery Room at the library.
