Letter: Malone should follow Pope Francis’ example

Malone should follow Pope Francis’ example

A number of years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor mentioning that it would be wonderful to sell the Buffalo Catholic Diocese’s mansion. The proceeds could be used for upkeep of all Catholic cemeteries where the churches had been closed in the necessary downsizing of the diocese. The idea is still a good one.

I was intrigued by the bishop’s stance that people need to be in the grandest home in Buffalo, a poor city among our nation’s cities, in order to “enjoy” an event. Yes, a restaurant would be less expensive, so would a free “function room” in one of the diocese’s closed schools.

His rationale is like saying that Catholics need a Rolls Royce to visit a soup kitchen because then the experience is more “enjoyable.” Catholics need to walk the walk, not talk the talk, especially in view of a very modern, practical pope.
