Bisons 16-under girls team keep title hopes alive

The Buffalo Bisons’ 16-under girls Tier I team kept its championship hopes alive at the USA Hockey Championships on Saturday in San Jose, Calif.

The Bisons advanced to the national semifinals with a 4-2 win over the Anaheim Lady Ducks as Ashley Songin’s third goal of the game was the winner. Olivia Zafuto also scored for the Bisons, who secured a No. 1 seed with Friday’s win over Detroit Honey Baked and were scheduled to play national power Shattuck St. Mary’s early Sunday morning in a game for a spot in today’s 5 p.m. national championship game.

The Bisons’ 19-under team’s dream of a championship ended in the quarterfinals in San Jose. Shattuck St. Mary’s Baylee Wellhausen’s goal with 2:40 left in regulation was the game winner as the Minnesota prep school beat Buffalo, 1-0. Madison Welch made 23 saves for the Bisons, whose roster featured all but one player from last year’s national runner-up team in the 16-under division.
