James A. Carmichael Jr. of Batavia, who served one term in the Assembly following an unusual Democratic win in Genesee County almost 50 years ago, died Monday in Buffalo General Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 88.
Born in Bessemer, Ala., Mr. Carmichael served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and was stationed in Japan and Burma.
He served in the Assembly from 1964 to 1966.
For 60 years, he operated his own Batavia-based insurance company, the Carmichael Agency. He also was an active member of Oakfield Community Bible Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Moroski; and a brother, William.
A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oakfield Community Bible Church, 80, N Main St.
