The Buffalo Bisons’ 19-under Tier I girls were the only Western New York hockey team to experience victory Thursday at the USA Hockey Championships.
In San Jose, Calif., Maddie Elia scored twice, Kristen Knoll scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and Kendall Appelbaum and Madison Sansone also scored in a 5-3 win over New Jersey. Buffalo clinched a spot in the quarterfinals with the win but can secure a top seed with a win this morning over Detroit Honey Baked.
The Bisons’ 16-under Tier I girls team dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime to New Jersey despite holding a 32-21 edge in shots. Olivia Zafuto scored for Buffalo.
In the Tier I boys event in Pittsburgh, the Buffalo Regals/Jr. Sabres need to win today and hope for help in order to advance to the playoff round. The Regals/Jr. Sabres dropped a 3-2 decision to Team Comcast of Philadelphia. Nathan Sucese scored twice for Buffalo, which faces Cleveland at 12:45 p.m. In the 14-under division, the Regals dropped a 5-2 decision to the New Jersey Devils Youth as Justin Cmunt and Nicholas Alfieri scored in the loss as Buffalo fell to 0-2 in pool play.
In the Tier II nationals in Troy, Mich., Cheektowaga’s 16-under and 18-under teams fell to 0-2. The 16-under dropped a 3-2 decision to Orange County Hockey Club as Michael Benaquist Jr. and Christofer Alberti scored. The 18-under squad lost 7-2 to Mid-State Mustangs (Pennsylvania) as Zachary Blew, Travis Valvo and Nathan Smith scored in defeat.
