Letter: Catholics must unite in defense of critics

Catholics must unite in defense of critics

After dutifully reporting on the selection of the new pope, it didn’t take long for The News to resume its criticism of the Catholic Church. A front-page article on March 28 questioned the need for Bishop Richard Malone to live in a mansion on Oakland Place. This was followed the next day with a commentary by Donn Esmonde, “No place for mansion in diocese.”

This double-barreled blast of criticism is silly and sophomoric. What’s next, demanding the bishop stop driving a car or wearing shoes when so many in the world do without?

I don’t expect the mainstream media to stop their attacks on the Catholic Church any time soon, however, it is time for Catholics to stand up to those who throw stones.
