Woman, unable to kick addiction, sent to jail

LOCKPORT – A Town of Lockport woman was sentenced to a year in Niagara County Jail Friday for violating probation on her conviction for selling crack cocaine.

Betty K. Bove, 55, of Chestnut Drive, has had longstanding neck and back problems. “I don’t think I’ll ever get off the pain medication,” she told County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas.

“You self-medicate to the point that you have to be rushed to the hospital to be resuscitated,” Farkas replied.

Defense attorney Angelo Musitano said Bove’s incarceration is likely to be costly for the county because of the large number of prescriptions Bove takes. “I’ve watched her deteriorate before my very eyes,” Musitano said.

She pleaded guilty to fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance for selling crack four times in the fall of 2010.
